Best Area for First-Time Visitors โ€“ Old Town

Queen Street in Niagara-on-the Lake

If you stay in the Old Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, you have easy access to nearby restaurants and cafรฉs, shops, the waterfront, historic attractions, the Shaw Festival, Fort George, easy evening walks, the start of the Niagara Parkway and Niagara River Recreation Trail.

It can get busy during weekend afternoons, although after the day trippers depart, there will be more access to the restaurants.

    Best Hotels in Old Town

Entrance of Prince of Wales Hotel in Niagara-on-the-Lake
Entrance to Prince of Wales Hotel

The iconic Prince of Wales Hotel sits with the best location in Old Town, right on the corner of King & Queen Streets across from Simcoe Park and a short walk to the waterfront. The hotel features elegant, Victorian-style rooms and a contemporary spa. The on-site restaurant holds a traditional English tea time every day.

I have a bias towards the Pillar & Post Inn, the first hotel I stayed at in Niagara-on-the-Lake. With historic charm located in a converted 19th-century fruit canning factory, this country inn now features high-end modern amenities. Great restaurant and spa facilities. Located a few blocks (walkable to Queen Street). Bike rentals available.

Best Area for Wine Lovers โ€“ Niagara Wine Country

    two Sisters Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake
    Two Sisters Estate Winery

Stay in wine country at a winery for more of a countryside experience. It will be quieter than in the Old Town, and you will be surrounded by vineyards with wineries nearby. It is a more romantic setting.

The disadvantage is that you will be more dependent on transportation, and it is less walkable.

There are also several accommodation options closer to the QEW, Niagara Falls, and several wineries.

Best Places to Stay Near Niagara-on-the-Lake Wineries

Riverbend Winery, Niagara on the Lake
    Riverbend Inn

Riverbend Inn & Vineyard – is located on John Street on the edge of Niagara-on-the-Lake and is surrounded by vineyards. Neighbours include the Two Sisters Estate Winery and Peller Estates. Oaklands Restaurant is a seasonal restaurant featuring ingredient-driven menus befitting the produce of the region alongside incredible wine pairings and creative cocktails. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend brunches.

Vineyard Villa is also surrounded by vineyards and is close to the Niagara Parkway. A homemade breakfast is served each morning. Two Sisters and Peller Estates wineries, with their fine-dining restaurants, are located just a few minutes’ walk from Vineyard Villa. Relax on the terrace or in the outdoor seating area with a patio for enjoying the scenic views.

The other option is to stay in town and take one of the Best Niagara-on-the-Lake Wine Tours.

    Best Romantic Hotels in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Where to Stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake includes the Oban Inn, Niagara-on-the-Lake
    Oban Inn

The Oban Inn is an intimate 28-room historic boutique property for couples or people looking for a weekend escape. Located in the heart of Old Town, a few blocks from Queen Street and overlooking Lake Ontario. ย It has a spa and well-regarded restaurant.

If you prefer a more modern option, consider Queens Landing. For others, there is the Pillar & Post or Prince of Wales. For a countryside experience, there is Riverbend Winery.

    Best Luxury Hotels in Niagara-on-the-Lake

    White Oak Resort, Niagara-on-the-Lake

White Oaks Conference & Spa Resort has a Niagara-on-the-Lake address, but it is located just off the QEW next to the Outlet Mall. I find this is more of a conference centre but a close drive to Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, the wine country (Chateau des Charmes), the Welland Canal, and the Outlet Mall across the road. It offers several outstanding restaurants.

Queens Landing is a more modern hotel in an old style located close to the Shaw Festival. It offers several restaurants and an indoor pool. Great for a weekend escape.

Best Boutique Hotels and Historic Inns

      Old Angel Inn in Niagara-on-the-Lake
      Olde Angel Inn

124 on Queen Hotel & Spa is a world-class spa and has critically acclaimed dining options. They also have underground parking, a beautiful zen garden, and a Starbucks for guests to enjoy. Recommended for couples or weekend getaways.

Harbour House Hotel has a nautical-inspired design and prime location steps away from the Niagara River. Harbour House pays tribute to Niagara-on-the-Lakeโ€™s rich history as a port town. Dogs are welcome.

The Olde Angel Inn is housed in a historic building, offering a unique and charming atmosphere a short block off Queen Street. The family-friendly restaurant serves British cuisine, with dining areas that include traditional, modern, and romantic settings.

      Best Value Accommodation

Garden of Perridsco Winery near White Oaks and Niagara College

Niagara College Residence & Conference Centre is located across from the White Oaks Resort and Outlet Mall. Generally available from May through mid-August, the rooms are basic but excellent value, and this property sells out quickly. Its wine bar and restaurant (when open), both staffed by students, are superb.

Where to Stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake Without a Car

If you don’t have a car or do not wish to drive, you can get to Niagara-on-the-Lake but should stay in the Old Town so that everything is walkable. You can also purchase guided wine tours right from town.

Public Transit – take the GO Train from Union Station in Toronto to Niagara Falls, where you catch the WEGO bus shuttle to Niagara-on-the-Lake. This is a seasonal service.

Should You Stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake or Niagara Falls?

      Niagara Falls

These are two very different experiences, and which you prefer will depend on your preferences.

Niagara Falls is lively with the falls, Clifton Hill Amusement area, Hornblower Cruise to the falls, and other attractions. There are some dining options and towers with views of the area. Suitable for families and honeymooners, and is very walkable.

Niagara-on-the-Lake has a different vibe with people shopping on the flower-lined streets, historic buildings, theatre, lots of cafes and restaurants, and nearby wineries. It is also very walkable and can be romantic. Cyclists will prefer this area.

How Many Nights Should You Stay in Niagara-on-the-Lake?

I’d recommend two nights (or more) for the more relaxed experience, particularly if wineries are part of the trip. See my 2-Day Niagara-on-the-Lake Getaway Itinerary for activity ideas.

Tips for Booking a Niagara-on-the-Lake Hotel

Book summer weekends early as space fills up quickly. Personally, I have had issues getting accommodation sometimes.
Fall wine season is pleasant and not as busy. In winter, many attractions are closed or have reduced hours
Some restaurants and cafes are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, even in the summer
Shaw Festival dates run from April to December if booking a show as well. I saw Funny Girl in 2026.
There is paid parking along Queen Street; check to see what arrangements the hotel provides.
Is breakfast included – Continental or a full breakfast
      Check-in times
Walking distance to Old Town with most of the hotels listed here an easy walk
Transportation to wineries can be arranged by some hotels or book a tour
      Cancellation policies
