I take a major road trip across a part of Canada every spring/summer for about 3 to 5 weeks. I also sometimes take additional road trips in my home province of Ontario. Canadaโ€™s long distances, changing weather, and stretches with limited services make good preparation especially important.

Preparation is especially important, and I generally take the same items and pack the same way on every trip. Being organized is important, as I can quickly locate road trip essentials; it is less stressful and more enjoyable.

This Road Trip Essentials Guide, which focuses on practical items can easily help you plan your own trip!

    1. Roadside Emergency Kit

    CYECTTR Car Roadside Emergency Kit

The CYECTTR Car Roadside Emergency Kit is a best seller on Amazon. Not surprising since purchasing a complete kit in a handy bag is easier than purchasing everything separately.

This offers a lot for the money with Jumper Cables, Tow Rope, Safety Hammer, Reflective Warning Triangle, Reflective Safety Vest, Tire Pressure Gauge, Safety Gloves, Mechanical Flashlight, Screwdriver, Raincoat, Snow shovel, PVC Tape, Voltage Tester, Fuse Set, whistle, and Multi-function tool card so you can quickly and confidently get back on the road.

    2. Portable Jump Starter

    Noco Boost Plus Jump Starter

I was on a road trip to Atlantic Canada and camping along the south shore of the St. Lawrence in the middle of nowhere when another couple I was travelling with said they could not start their car. I was able to start their car, but calling the CAA would have taken a long time.

The Noco Boost Plus Jump Starter has a lot of features, including a built-in flashlight, a portable power bank, storage bag, and other items. USB Recharging in 3 hours, so itโ€™s ready when it matters most. Instantly start dead batteries with 1000 amps of peak lithium power.

    3. Portable Tire Inflator

AstroAI Tire Inflator Portable Air Compressor

The AstroAI Tire Inflator with a 9.8Ft Cord-12V DC-Powered Auto Pump, Digital Pressure Gauge, and LED Light for bicycles and cars. It has a compact size and is easy to store.

It helps with a slow leak or low tire pressure. The tire inflatorโ€™s digital screen provides accurate readouts and 4 pressure units (PSI, BAR, KPA, kg/cmยฒ) to choose from, while its independent buttons allow for intuitive control. You can easily preset the tire pressure and not worry about constantly monitoring it; this smart inflator will automatically shut off once it reaches the desired pressure.

Note: This product must be powered by a 12V DC Cigarette Lighter to function properly, and ensure the vehicle is in a running state. It is equipped with a 9.8-foot cord, which can meet the usage needs of most regular-sized vehicles.

    4. Tire-Pressure Gauge

ETENWOLF T300 Digital Tire Pressure Gauge

The ETENWOLF T300 Digital Tire Pressure Gauge is used before leaving and during longer journeys. Very accurate with a built-in LED light.

    5. Car Escape Tool

Amazon Basics Emergency Seat Belt Cutter and Window Hammer Tool

Car Escape Tool from Amazon Basics is designed to help escape from a sinking, overturned, crashed, or burning car. Has an emergency seat belt cutter and window hammer tool. 2-in-1 emergency-escape tool provides a window hammer and seat-belt cutter; 2-pack

Hard tungsten metal double-head hammer for quickly breaking a car-door window. Sharp blade for easily cutting through a seat belt; bright-orange plastic handle provides a secure grip

Protective bracket included for safe storage; store in center console or driver-side door pocket to keep it within reach rather than pack in the trunk.

    6. Compact First-Aid Kit

Road Trip Essentials should included a Ready compact First Aid Kit

The Ready First Aid Kit is perfect for car emergencies. This road trip essentials item has a compact design (only 21.8 cm x 10.6 cm x 6.8 cm) and fits into your glove compartment or under a seat.

Includes 107 common supplies for small cuts such as bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, blisters, and other minor problems, all in a water-resistant bag.

It is also suited for camping and hiking during your road trip if that is part of the plan, as the water-resistant bag withstands outdoor weather. The compact, lightweight design fits easily in your backpack without taking up much space.

You may also want to add any personal and headache medications.

    7. Rechargeable Flashlight

The Blukar Rechargeable Flashlight is a great addition for any road trip. A phone flashlight is not always enough during a nighttime breakdown.

The small pocket-sized design of this waterproof small mini LED flashlight makes it easy to store, and it has 4 lighting modes, with the super bridge spotlight and floodlight being especially handy when camping or with a car emergency.

The beam range is 180 meters (590 feet) with a long battery life of up to 16 hours, but you can use the USB connection to recharge as necessary. The red light advises when charging, and the green light when fully charged.

      8. Emergency Blanket or Warm Car Blanket

S.O.L. Survive Outdoors Longer 90 Percent Heat Reflective Survival Blanket

I have a S.O.L. Survive Outdoors Longer 90 Percent Heat Reflective Survival Blanket in both the glove compartment of my car and a second permanently in my backpack. The blanket is incredibly lightweight and compact, making it easy to pack

I have never had to use them, but they provide comfort during my travels. I do road trips, camp, hike, and snowshoe in the winter, so I want this item with me. In Canada, they can be a lifesaver, especially for mountain routes, shoulder-season travel, and winter drives.

      9. Windshield Washer Fluid and Basic Car Supplies

Rain X All Season Window Washer Fluid

I don’t know about you, but I go through a lot of Rain X Windshield Washer Fluid, mainly in the winter on overnight road trips to the ski resorts, snowhowing, and other winter activities, although this washer fluid is good in all seasons.

Other basic car supplies you may consider carrying may include a microfibre cloth, paper towels, a small roll of duct tape (I always seem to find uses for this), work gloves, and an ice scraper.

      10. Paper Map or Road Atlas

      Canada RV Road Atlas

I have learned the hard way to always have a Canadian Road Atlas on any road trip, as in some areas my GPS does not work. Getting to Prince Edward National Park from the Confederation Bridge, for example, your GPS will send you to a dead-end road which is part of the park, but not the Stanhope Campground I wanted.

This road atlas has easy-read large-print maps, a campground & dump station directory, Canadian National Park routes, and rest stops for every province.

This backup remains useful when travelling through areas with unreliable cellular coverage, which is often on my Canadian Road Trips. Also, very handy, I find the road atlas gives me a broad view of the area, while I can zoom in with the directions using my GPS.

      11. Secure Phone Mount

      WeatherTech Phone Mount

I held off getting a WeatherTech Phone Mount until my last road trip; what a mistake, I should have done it sooner. It fits in my coffee holder and fits most cell phone sizes, making it easy to view.

It comes in a variety of colours, but I picked basic black. The open-access design lets me charge my phone while it’s mounted in the car’s cell phone cup holder. The adjustable tilt and rotation help provide the perfect viewing angle, making this car cup holder phone mount ideal for GPS navigation and hands-free calls.

While I got a cup-holder mount, the best choice depends on the vehicle and where you can see the screen comfortably. Other styles include those with a dashboard mount, windshield mount, and air-vent mount.

      12. Multi-Port Car Charger

      Wodenta Multi-Port Car Charger

The Wodenta Multi-Port Car Charger has 3-Port Simultaneous Charging featuring 2 USB-C PD ports and 1 USB-A QC port; this car phone charger powers up 3 electronics at once with a combined 67W max output. Can handle driverโ€™s phone, passenger devices, cameras, and other electronics.

      13. Portable Power Bank

      Iniu Portable Power Bank

There are many models, but I purchased the Iniu Power Bank years ago and never regretted my decision. Whether I am camping, backcountry hiking, on a road trip, or travelling to another country, I always carry it with me. I love that I can charge my cell phone and other electronics when there is no power source.

Available in many colours, it is pocket-sized so pack easy, and it charges fast when preparing for your trip. Easy-to-read digital dial tells how charged the unit is.

Flight-approved, it is the ultimate travel power bank. Its TSA-approved capacity easily passes airport security. Plus, the built-in flashlight provides instant illumination for power outages, camping, or searching your bag.

        17. Portable Car Cooler

        Yeti tundra 45 Cooler

A cooler can save money and make it easier to carry healthier meals and snacks. There are 3 types. Sometimes when camping, there is no grocery store (i.e., Lake Superior Provincial Park in Ontario), and this can be a lifesaver.

Hard-sided cooler – The Yeti Tundra 45 Cooler is available in a variety of colours. Soft-sider cooler – The Hap Tim Collapsible Travel Cooler for Outdoor Travel, Hiking, Beach Picnic BBQ Party. It is easy to carry and leak-proof. Measuring 16.53″ L x 9.84″ W x 10.23″ H, this cooler bag holds 30 liters by volume, with a load capacity over 40 pounds. I find I have to replace the ice daily.

Electric Car Cooler – The EUHOMY 12 Volt Car Refrigerator is hard-sided and available in different sizes. Designed with two zones to effectively reduce odor. The 12v cooler features a removable internal basket for easy storage and access. With Bluetooth mode and app control, you can conveniently manage the car cooler from a distance to facilitate your journey. I have had issues finding electric campsites at times.

        18. Reusable Water Bottles

The Water-to-Go Active Filter Bottle is designed for travellers, as you don’t know what the water will be like along your road trip. It can purify any fresh water, like tap but even lakes, rivers, and muddy water, so you never lack safe, clean drinking water in an emergency.

Avoid dysentery sickness and travel-related diseases. Water-to-Go has a triple-layer filter that removes viruses like Hepatitis A, Rotavirus, and Norovirus (most filter bottles do not remove viruses), plus bacteria, parasites, heavy metals, chemicals, and pesticides.

Water-to-Go water purifier bottles have an innovative triple-layer filter that combines mechanical filtration, activated carbon, and electropositive nanofiltration to ensure your drinking water is safe and clean.

I recommend one bottle per traveller rather than relying on a single shared container.

The Yeti Rambler Travel Mug is a practical choice for early starts, scenic drives and long days behind the wheel. Available in many colours, it is stainless steel, vacuum-insulated with a stronghold lid. An excellent cup that keeps drinks hot or cold all day.

        K KNODEL Car Garbage Can

I often go camping with the outdoor recreation club I belong to, and it seems I am the only one who ever thinks of this. At many campgrounds in Canada, you must take your trash to a central garbage and recycling area, so this is handy. I guess I am on garbage duty again.

The K KNODEL Car Garbage Can will help with this leak-resistant garbage container, which keeps the passenger area cleaner on a multi-day trip. It comes in 2 sizes.

        Boacay Travel Blanket

The Teton Sports Travel Pillow is best for passengers and rest stops while on a road trip, but I use it when camping. It is compact and has washable options that do not take over the back seat. No inflating is necessary as the pillow lofts up on its own.
