Where to stay on Vancouver Island: Tofino vs Ucluelet. I visited both towns along with Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. I decided to make my base in Tofino, but there are good reasons Ucluelet should also be considered.
Really, the best base depends on how you want to spend your days, and they are an easy drive of 40 km (25 miles) apart, with Pacific Rim National Park Reserve nicely tucked in between.
This guide will help you decide whether Tofino or Ucluelet is the best choice for you!
Tofino vs. Ucluelet at a Glance
Outdoor excursions like whale watching and kayaking are available equally from both towns.
Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, located between these two towns, offers several beaches, including the popular Long Beach, plus numerous hiking trails.
| Town | Beaches & Trails | Restaurants & Accommodation | Best Suite To |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tofino – Lively | Access to several beaches suitable for surfing. One short hiking trail to a cove. | Lots of accommodation options spread along Highway 4 into town. Variety of restaurants. | Beach lovers, you like a lively dining scene. |
| Ucluelet – Quieter | Limited beach access. Wild Pacific Trail is popular. | More limited accommodation options. Few restaurants. | Quieter vacation with better hiking options. |
Why Stay in Tofino?

If your purpose is to surf or spend time on the beach, then Tofino should be your first choice, without question. Another reason to stay here is the variety of dining options available, although I found many of them crowded during my visit.
Excursions from whale watching, bear watching cruises, kayaking, and trips to the Broken Islands (part of Pacific Rim) are available from both places. As are rental bicycles, should you wish to ride about town or the Pacific Rim Recreational Trail, which starts in Tofino.
Whether you stay downtown or near the beaches will depend on the reason for your visit. I stayed a few blocks from downtown, and it was an easy walk.
Recommended Places to Stay in Tofino

There are lots of accommodation choices, but I have provided options for staying on the beach, staying near downtown, or choosing somewhere with a distinctive atmosphere.
Pacific Sands Beach Resort — Beachfront on Cox Bay
The Pacific Sands Beach Resort is located directly on Cox Bay, approximately 7 km from Tofino’s village. It features suites and beach houses with fully equipped kitchens, making it practical to prepare meals between beach outings. And the beachfront accommodation offers immediate access to the sand.
Its location outside the village means downtown restaurants and shops require a separate trip. And the grocery store is also on the edge of downtown.
Families, couples, and surfers who want beach access to be the centre of their stay will appreciate this hotel.
Tofino Resort + Marina — A Convenient Downtown Base
At the entrance to downtown Tofino and is the hotel I stayed at. An on-site marina, Adventure Centre, and Shelter Restaurant. Room choices include standard rooms and suites, with a kitchenette available in a specific suite category.
A waterfront property does not guarantee a water-view room, and I had a nice room with a balcony overlooking a parking lot. The outdoor section of the Shelter Restaurant is down by the water and, besides the view, provided an excellent dinner. Breakfast was another matter, with limited choices and poorly prepared, so I headed downtown after the first day.
This is good for visitors who want to walk to restaurants and shops as it is only a few blocks, and travellers planning excursions on the water available from the onsite Adventure Centre.
Hotel Zed Tofino — A Colourful Rainforest Stay
Beside Tofino Inlet, approximately a seven-minute walk from Chesterman Beach and a five-minute drive from downtown. The retro-inspired rooms, a rainforest hot tub, inlet access, and unusual shared spaces, including a mini disco and a bike path through the lobby. Some room categories have kitchenettes.
It is not directly on an ocean beach; reaching Chesterman Beach involves a walk away from the property.
Couples, friends, and families who enjoy playful design and something different from a traditional coastal resort. I had an excellent breakfast and would describe the place as quirky and fun.
Why Stay in Ucluelet?

Ucluelet is a lot quieter and easy to walk around, with a working harbour and coastal scenery. The Wild Pacific Trail is much more interesting than any Tofino trails, with guided options available.
While Tofino has several museums, Ucluelet has an interesting waterfront aquarium with a catch-and-release policy and the ability to touch some of the marine life. Across the street and around town were several art galleries. I liked how everything is so close and easy to walk to.
There is a grocery store but limited dining options compared to Tofino. The Adventure Shop offers the same excursions you can book in Tofino, including kayaking, whale watching, and others, so no difference there.
There are some beaches along a section of the Wild Pacific Trail, but they do not compare with those in Tofino or in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, so if that is important, a drive is in order.
Recommended Places to Stay in Ucluelet

Black Rock Oceanfront Resort — Oceanfront Scenery and Trail Access
On Ucluelet’s rugged Pacific coastline, beside Big Beach, with the Wild Pacific Trail running through the property. Studios and larger suites with kitchens or kitchenettes, gas fireplaces, balconies, and soaking tubs. Guests also have access to outdoor hot tubs and a plunge pool.
Views vary significantly. Some suites overlook the rainforest, while others offer partial or full ocean view, so you should select your room category carefully.
This hotel is for couples wanting a scenic getaway and walkers who want coastal trails close to their accommodation.
West Coast Motel — A Practical Central Stay
Beside Ucluelet’s Small Craft Harbour, within walking distance of shops and restaurants. A family-operated property with a choice of basic rooms and kitchen suites, plus access to an indoor pool, sauna, fitness centre, and shared barbecue facilities.
This is a traditional motel rather than a boutique resort. It is a practical choice, and compare actual dates as it is sometimes one of the cheapest options.
It is for travellers who want a straightforward base for exploring and prefer spending their time outdoors.
Water’s Edge Shoreside Suites — Self-Catering by the Harbour
On Harbour Crescent, overlooking the protected waters of Ucluelet Harbour and the marina. One- and two-bedroom condo-style suites with full kitchens, separate living areas, gas fireplaces, and private balconies or patios. Selected suites include outdoor soaker tubs.
The setting faces sheltered harbour waters rather than the open Pacific. So if you want crashing waves and storm-watching views, you should choose an exposed oceanfront property instead.
Good for families, couples wanting extra space, and visitors staying several nights who prefer preparing some meals.
Which Is Better for Your Trip?

Beach holidays and surfing: base yourself in Tofino, which has access to better beaches.
Coastal walks and hiking: hard to beat the Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet. While you can walk a trail and do a coastal walk in Tofino, it does not compare.
Couples and quieter getaway: Again, Ucluelet is a quieter getaway. But as a couple and looking for something more lively, Tofino will be your choice.
Families needing kitchens or additional space: Either destination works. There are grocery stores in both towns to stock up the kitchen.
Travellers without a car: I would stay in Tofino with the beaches and more dining options. Consider renting a bicycle to ride to the beaches or trails in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve along the recreation trail.
Watching your budget: compare accommodation on actual dates rather than assuming one town is always cheaper. However, you will generally find Ucluelet is less expensive; many visitors choose to stay in the more affordable Ucluelet and drive over to Tofino to enjoy its beaches and restaurants
Visiting Pacific Rim National Park Reserve from Either Town

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve is located between the two towns, but popular Long Beach; many of the hiking trails are closer to Tofino. Also, the recreation trail (cycling and walking) starts in Tofino. The Kwisitis Visitor Centre is 15.7 km from Ucluelet, while double that distance from Tofino.
Wherever you stay, it is a short drive to the park along Highway 4.
Should You Split Your Stay Between Tofino and Ucluelet?

Because they are only 30 to 40 minutes apart, I would pick one as a base and drive along Highway 4 to visit the other. It makes more sense than packing and unpacking for such a short distance.
My Vancouver Island Road Trip Itinerary talks about touring in the area.
Practical Accommodation Booking Tips

First, this is a very popular area for visitors, especially from June to September, so make your reservations early. Decide whether Tofino or Ucluelet is best for you.
Check the property’s exact location, parking, kitchen facilities, cancellation terms, and seasonal amenities. Consider how often you want to drive for meals and activities.
Look beyond the nightly rate to the total stay cost.
FAQs: Tofino vs. Ucluelet
Is Tofino or Ucluelet better for a first visit?
It depends on what is most important. If you like lots of restaurants and beaches, head to Tofino. If you prefer something quieter and a better hiking trail, then head to Ucluelet.
Is Ucluelet cheaper than Tofino?
Generally, Ucluelet is slightly cheaper than Tofino, but check actual dates as rates can vary.
Can you visit both from one base?
You should visit both from one base; they are only about 30-40 minutes or so apart.
Which is better without a car?
Tofino is better if you do not have a car, as there are more dining options and the beaches are closer. I suggest renting a bicycle to get around.
How many nights should you stay?
It really depends on your activities. Into whale watching, kayaking, and a few hikes, then 3 to 4 nights may be enough. Want to brush up on your surfing? You will want to stay longer.
My Recommendation: Where Would I Stay Next Time?
I would still stay in Tofino the next time but would drive over one day to explore the Ucluelet Aquarium and Wild Pacific Trail. I just like all the accommodation and dining options in Tofino and the bike trail that goes through the town, so I would stay there.
It can be cheaper in Ucluelet, but unless it is significant, I would still stay in Tofino. Whatever you choose, book early to get the accommodation you want.
